A Path Forward for Republicans in Alabama

11/15/2017 Published on Forbes.com

In recent weeks, just a month away from Alabama’s December special election, five women, some who were under 18 at the time, have accused Republican nominee Roy Moore of sexual assault.

For reasons that are painfully unclear, Roy Moore is not only still on the ballot, but a front runner in the race.

It is my position that whatever the facts may be, Moore needs to step aside.

In fact, even if Moore wins the race, it is questionable whether or not he will even be seated in the Senate.

Chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, Sen. Cory Gardner said, “I believe the individuals speaking out against Roy Moore spoke with courage and truth, proving he is unfit to serve in the United States Senate and he should not run for office. If he refuses to withdraw and wins, the Senate should vote to expel him, because he does not meet the ethical and moral requirements of the United States Senate.”

Going forward, the Republicans are in a precarious position as it is too late to take Moore’s name off of the physical ballots. A write-in campaign is one of the only scenarios in which party can save itself from more controversy.

Many believe that the incumbent Senator, Luther Strange, who lost to Moore in the Republican primary is the logical, best choice to conduct such a campaign.
