The Tide Shifts on Guns to the Democrats’ Favor

For decades, the common perception has been that gun issues benefit Republican campaigns and a coveted endorsement from the National Rifle Association can be the tipping point for Republican wins in swing states.

Yet conventional wisdom has taken an about-face and for the first time ever, the NRA is being recognized to have hurt rather than help candidates in critical races this cycle.

Possibly the most instructive example from the NRA’s recent losing streak is the election of Democrat Ralph Northam as Governor of Virginia earlier this month.
