Putin’s Continued March

11/13/2017 Published on Forbes.com

On President Trump’s Asia trip this past week, it was reported that he initially planned to meet with President Vladimir Putin. Although a formal meeting never occurred, a brief exchange between the two world leaders shed light on some worrisome developments in U.S. foreign policy.

When questioned by the press on what Putin had to say about Russian meddling in the election, President Trump said that the Russian Leader said he “absolutely did not meddle in our election. He did not do what they are saying he did” and that he really believed Putin.

When asked to clarify his comments due to the fact that our intelligence agencies have unequivocally confirmed Russia meddled in the 2016 US Presidential election, President Trump said, “What I said is that I believe [Putin] believes that…As to whether I believe it or not, I’m with our [intelligence] agencies, especially as currently constituted.”

This perplexing position on Russia became more muddled on Sunday when President Trump tweeted that having a relationship with Russia is a “good thing.”

It is not a good thing.

In my latest book, Putin on the March: The Russian President’s Global Advance, I argue not only that having a relationship with Russia is by no means a good thing, but that the United States, during the Obama administration and thus far into the Trump administration, has been outmatched and outwitted by Russia and in no uncertain terms, to our country’s detriment.

Earlier this year, former Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge reminded us that all the while, President Trump talks about winning, “right now, Putin is winning.”

Ridge was sharing his assessment of the investigations into Putin’s election meddling happening in Washington.
